This unit is very adaptable and supports student learning toward the content standards in a number of ways. The strongest connections are in social sciences and the arts.

Students will:

  • observe and respond to work by Lao traditional artists in Oregon.
  • explain and analyze Lao traditional art using artistic concepts and tools.
  • identify folk and traditional arts that are uniquely Lao and their functions within a Lao American community.
  • understand that cultural relocation has impacted Lao folk arts and cultural expression.
  • understand that traditional arts are connected to the history and culture of a community as well as an artist's personal experiences.

  • make connections between students' traditions and the traditions of their parents and/or elders.
  • read maps to identify countries in Asia and major geographic features of Laos.
  • identify reasons for immigration from Laos and the impact of relocation on individuals and communities.
  • create maps of students' own physical and cultural communities.
  • identify cultural characteristics of the Lao ethnic group.
  • research in-depth a topic related to the unit.
