Lao Traditions of Oregon Content Standards Connections
Content Standards Connections
This unit is very adaptable and supports student learning toward the content standards in a number of ways. The strongest connections are in social sciences and the arts.
The Arts

Students will:
- observe and respond to work by Lao traditional artists in Oregon.
- explain and analyze Lao traditional art using artistic concepts and tools.
- identify folk and traditional arts that are uniquely Lao and their functions within a Lao American community.
- understand that cultural relocation has impacted Lao folk arts and cultural expression.
- understand that traditional arts are connected to the history and culture of a community as well as an artist's personal experiences.

- identify traditions within students' own families and communities
- make connections between students' traditions and the traditions of their parents and/or elders.
- read maps to identify countries in Asia and major geographic features of Laos.
- identify reasons for immigration from Laos and the impact of relocation on individuals and communities.
- create maps of students' own physical and cultural communities.
- identify cultural characteristics of the Lao ethnic group.
- research in-depth a topic related to the unit.

- read (aloud, skimming, and closely reading) from the text of this unit
- draw connections between the unit text, other informational texts and students' own experiences
