About STArt

Purpose

STArt provides support for teachers in art. It is a place to begin. While initially the focus has been on gathering existing visual arts and music resources for K-8 teachers, it is hoped that STArt will expand and evolve over time.

STArt is designed to grow by inviting teachers and arts specialists to evaluate existing resources and submit adaptations and additions to the site.

Background

In March of 1997 the Oregon Arts Commission with leadership from Oregon's Regional Arts Councils was awarded a grant to develop a variety of Web-based resources. Teachers, artists, and arts specialists gathered from around the state to help guide the conceptual development and preliminary identification and development of arts resources for STArt.

A process for gathering information for STArt included:
  1. Surveys sent to each RAC coordinator to identify key personnel and projects in his or her region.
  2. A conceptual-development workshop of twenty artists, educators, and technology specialists from around the state to identify and prioritize resource-content types that would support classroom teachers.
  3. An articulation workshop attended by nineteen artists and teachers to align their existing classroom projects to the Oregon education standards for art.
  4. Development of a database for storing Web-based resources that were annotated, catalogued, and evaluated by a group of eight artists and teachers in support of music and visual arts education.

Catherine Ballard, education director for Lane Arts Council, managed the project with leadership from visual artist Sandy Brooke; Salem-Keizer art curriculum specialist Aurelia Fuerth; Lisa Platt, education director for Linn-Benton Council for the Arts; and Jane Howell, education director for Umpqua Valley Arts Council. Countless others contributed the content for the site, and it is through their creative efforts that OPEN is able to bring you the STArt Web site.

Graphics

STArt graphics and icons were created from the work of young people participating in the 1996 Summer Arts Connection Program in Cottage Grove.
