  • The traits of voice and word choice have always been scored on the state performance assessment and are recommended to be scored on classroom work samples. However, these scores are not included in required criteria for meeting CIM standards. (Sentence fluency score also not included in required criteria for Benchmark #1 only).
  • State performance assessment is not required at Benchmark #1, #2, or #3.
  • New performance standards have been established for state writing testing at the 4th and 7th grade levels. These grade-level performance standards are listed in the chart below.
  • Students at the CIM benchmark may meet the standards in two ways. Option A applies to students who meet the standard on the state performance assessment. Option B applies to students who conditionally meet the standard on the state performance assessment.
  • State performance assessment requires trait scores of 3 or higher in order for composite score to meet the standard.
  • See Composite Scoring - Writing to figure composite score for state performance assessment.
  • Composite scoring does not apply to school work samples.
  • All students in grades 3 through 8 must complete a classroom work sample, scored against the criteria of the state scoring guide, in writing during each school year.
  • Trait scores for "citing sources" are applicable only to research papers. Scores in this trait are not required for meeting CIM standards.
